In this episode, Bud (North Star) and Aly (Pug Dog) hike to the summit of Mount Abraham via the Battell Trail and a portion of The Long Trail northbound. Both trails were snowy, but well packed down and did not require the use of snow shoes; MICROspikes on the other hand and were quite helpful. This was especially true because of the scrambling hikers are required to undergo as they reach the high point of Abraham’s summit. Hiking this trail makes for a great way for individuals, couples, and families to spend a portion of their Christmas Day celebrations.
The day's weather was cold and partly sunny, with temperatures of 32 degrees F at the trailhead and 30F and windy at the summit. The trail was surprisingly alive with owners and dogs completing morning exercise routines, and families engaging in their traditions of Christmas day hiking. Luckily, even though the mountain was quite populated, we had the summit all to ourselves today.
Using the Battell Trail and the LT to summit Abraham is rated as a hard hike according to AllTrails. Considering some of the scrambling and the overall steepness of the trail, we agree with that rating.
This hike was recorded on December 25, 2019.
