Rewilding Maputo National Park

Join us for the next chapter of an incredible rewilding journey at Maputo National Park. 🐾

Through intensive restoration and conservation initiatives, and the support of committed partners and funders over the past decade, the park's animal populations have grown to a total over 12,000! This is part of Mozambique's National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC) mission, in partnership with Peace Parks Foundation, to actively revive and rewild Maputo National Park. 💫

Dominated by herbivores, Maputo National Park’s warden, Miguel Goncalves, says that now "is the right time to bring in carnivores, top predators." 🐆

Building on already strong relationships with Sabie Game Park and the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance, Miguel’s team undertook the bold mission to capture spotted hyena from Sabie Game Park, then to be transported and released into Maputo National Park. 🙌

In our previous episode, which you can watch here, we learned that hyenas were the priority carnivore to be reintroduced to the park as they lay the foundations for well-balanced habitats and species dynamics: they play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by eating carcasses and helping prevent the spread of disease. ♻️

In this exciting episode, we go behind the scenes of the capture phase of this translocation, where the team spends long nights in the bush, using creative techniques to lure the clever spotted hyenas near them in order to dart them more easily. Their hard work and dedication ultimatley in the end, as the team successfully captures five hyenas before sending them safely on their way to their new home at Maputo National Park. 👏
