From dawn till dusk, to the rhythm of the daily calls to prayer, a surprising crowd moves around the Algerian capital's rooftops. They are closed spaces that have become mirrors of the contradictions, violence, intolerance, and never-ending struggles affecting Algerian society.
Algerian director Merzak Allouache spoke to Euromed Audiovisual about The Rooftops, his latest film that was shot in Algeria and recently competed at this year's Venice Film Festival.
"Rooftops in cities like Algiers have become spaces of daily life. They are as busy as the streets, since a lack in housing results in many people living [there]. I told myself that it would be good [to shoot there] as it would be an interior/exterior, with the city as a backdrop."
"We used to have our own cinema, film theatres, an audience... For the first films that I shot in Algeria, I toured around the whole of Algeria, meeting students, etc. Today, if the films make it [to a screen], it's because there was the odd event here, a film club there, and that's it! It's terrible."
