The final run of the town of Yatesville, Georgia's old 1926 Federal Electric Type 7 siren, which was replaced by the refurbished 1964 Federal Sign & Signal Thunderbolt 1000T that sounds off second and third. The old siren (Type 7) was originally purchased in 1927 by the City of Thomaston as a fire siren to call volunteer firefighters to action, and was later moved to Yatesville around 1970 to serve as their fire siren until the department purchased a radio system, which then the siren was added to the county siren network for severe weather warnings. The replacement siren (Thunderbolt) was originally in service in the City of Norman, OK as part of their former outdoor warning system, and was brought back to GA to be overhauled and put back in service. This siren was refurbished both mechanically and cosmetically over the winter by McCranie Warning Systems of Rhine, GA, and installed on March 1, 2014. After this test, the old siren was removed from its pole and taken to its new home at The Rock Ranch in The Rock, GA to be stored until it can be cosmetically refurbished to be displayed alongside "Molly", the City of Thomaston's first fire truck that was also purchased at the same time as the siren.
For those interested, I was set up in front of the Yatesville Public Library about 330 feet northeast of the two sirens' location. Both sirens were installed right in front of the Yatesville Fire Department on Childs Avenue, on either side of the pump house. Now only the pole remains from the old siren, which will be re-purposed for mounting the department's radio repeater antenna to get it up higher in the air.
