Players engage in one-on-one karate matches, aiming to score two full points (represented by yin-yang symbols) to win a round. The game features 18 distinct moves, including punches, kicks, blocks, and somersaults, each requiring specific joystick movements. As players progress, they face increasingly skilled opponents across various stages, from serene dojos to dramatic outdoor arenas.

A standout feature is the game's bonus round, where players must defeat a charging bull with a single strike, paying homage to legendary martial artist Mas Oyama. The game's atmospheric soundtrack, composed by Neil Brennan, enhances the immersive experience and has been praised for its evocative quality.

Upon release, The Way of the Exploding Fist became a commercial success, topping UK software sales charts and selling over 500,000 copies across all platforms by 1987. It received critical acclaim, with Zzap!64 awarding it a 93% rating and naming it a "Sizzler." The game's influence extended beyond the C64, with ports to platforms like the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC, and it inspired sequels that expanded on its gameplay mechanics
