In July 1887, a fast-moving fire tore through downtown St. Augustine and left much of the city’s core in ruins, including the Cathedral Basilica on the Plaza. But one historic object survived the worst of it, the church bell.
In this episode, Chad Gallivanter walks you through what sparked the 1887 blaze, how the fire spread through the Old City, and what happened at the Cathedral as townspeople rushed in with buckets and hand pumps, trying to keep the tower standing. We also dig into what’s known, and what’s often overstated, about the bell itself, including the claims about its age, where it may have been cast, and why this one artifact became a symbol of what St. Augustine refused to lose.
