Shaving Foam Technique No.2 - Distress Oxides and Mica Powders

This is the second in a series I am doing about the shaving foam technique. This technique has been around for many years but I love the way you can get really cool prints form it so thought I would do a series about it, and try to reignite the love!

In this video I look at how Distress Oxide Sprays work with shaving foam and also how to use mica powders effectively.

The Distress Oxides are a pigment and dye mix and react with water to oxidise and make a chalky finish. When sprayed onto foam they start to oxidise as there is liquid in the foam. That means the finished colour is chalky, which I rather like.

The colours I used faded in the foam far faster than liquid acrylic ink (used in video No.1). This could be due to the combination of the dye and pigment.

When I used the mica it was trial and error, as I hadn't added it previously. The lesson learned from this is very much put the mica on last so it transfers to the paper and does not get taken off with the ruler.

These backgrounds had varying success in my eyes but it is good to know how these inks react compared to acrylic inks (see No.1 in the series).
