Refuting Islam in One Word: Mormonism (live with Tony Costa)

The justification for Islam's existence, at least in the minds of Muslims today, is that the previous revelation had become corrupted and thus God needed to send a new prophet. But, this time it would be different - God would make sure the religion didn't become corrupt by revealing it a special man through an angel (with no witnesses to vouch for the revelation). This new revelation was similar to, one might even say copied from, Jewish and Christian texts. It shares a lot teachings in common with Christianity, but denies the core doctrines of the Faith. Despite hostility and even violent persecution from the locals, the new religion survived and indeed has grown rapidly since then. Thus proving the legitimacy of the prophet and the truth of the religion.

How does one defeat this argument? Replace the word Islam with Latter Day Saints and Muslims with Mormons and it's all still true. But that means the argument fails and Islam (and Mormonism) does not have a legitimate case for its truth claims.
