On March 2nd, 2024, Hackney Downs Park saw the unveiling of the refurbished New Cross Fire Tribute. This moving event, hosted by the Older Generation Younger Generation (OGYG) organisation, commemorated the 14 young lives lost in the 1981 New Cross Fire. Community leaders, local students, and the Mayor of Hackney gathered to honour the legacy of Charles Collins, who planted the original memorial trees. The ceremony included speeches, poems, and a ribbon-cutting, culminating in the release of balloons as a symbol of remembrance.
Attending the event was Patricia from the NCFF, BSix students, Professor Gus John from the Black Peoples' Day of Action, Wayne Haynes from the NCFF, Lucie Scott who recited a poem, and Sandra Ruddock and Richard Gooding who read out the names of the victims. Pastor Steve Lawrence led a blessing and a minute of silence. The ceremony concluded with the release of balloons and an official ribbon-cutting, accompanied by music from Jah Bunny.
This poignant occasion served as a reminder of the importance of the preservation of our shared history. You can visit the tribute along the path of Hackney Downs Park. Please see here for the location. https://what3words.com/adjust.talent....
