The Namib Desert is a combination of sand dunes and bare rocks that stretches along the west coast of southern Africa. Impermanent rivers flow towards the coast in this arid environment but very rarely reach the ocean.
The Swakop River is an ephemeral river and it is a major river in western central Namibia.
It is 460 km long and has a 30,100 km2 large catchment area and its run-off is roughly 40 million cubic metres per annum.
Its river source is in the Khomas Highland and then crosses the Namib desert and reaches the Atlantic Ocean at Swakopmund.
The historical feat came as a result of continuous rainfall experienced inland this year. The ephemeral Swakop River is in flood again on 16 February 2022 for the first time since 2011. Hundreds spectators have gathered along the coast to take in this rare sight.
