Jeremie Lasue is an Astronomer who works with a Mars Rover and also studies comets & asteroids with space instruments he has developed!
Summary: Comets have puzzled astronomers for centuries by their unpredictable orbits, and spectacular colorful tails that make some of the most fascinating phenomena of the Solar System. On March 14 1986, the Giotto space mission from the European Space Agency flew-by comet 1P/Halley and took the first ever pictures of a comet nucleus. Those irregular balls of dust and icy materials are cold remnants of the formation of planets and hold clues to the Solar System's primordial composition.
On November 12, 2014, the pair of European spacecraft, Rosetta and Philae, successfully orbited and landed on the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, enabling the closest and longest cometary studies ever.
This talk will review our current knowledge of comets, and the essential role played by the European space missions in unraveling their secrets. We will conclude by describing the Comet Interceptor space mission that will launch in 2029 to study a fresh comet from the Oort cloud.
