The House of Representatives and the Senate met in Joint Session on January 4, 1989 to count the electoral college votes of the 1988 United States presidential election.
Vice President George H. W. Bush presides over the session. After the state by state reading of the electoral votes, he announces the election of himself as president and Dan Quayle as vice president.
For president, George H. W. Bush received 426 votes, Michael Dukakis received 111 votes and Lloyd Bentsen received 1 vote. For vice president, Dan Quayle received 426 votes, Lloyd Bentsen received 111 votes and Michael Dukakis received 1 vote.
