This is an 8½-mile loop hike with 3,100' of elevation gain. Like most of the trails in the Huachucas, both the Ida Canyon and Oversite Canyon trails started off as mining roads. / @flynnhikes There are old mines, caves, a tumbled down miner's cabin that we didn't stop at on this hike, and more along this route. On a winter hike a couple years ago I followed both a Border Patrol agent and a mountain lion's tracks in the snow along the way. You are very close to the Mexico-U.S. border in this area.
Photo on Ramsey Peak at 5:03 is courtesy of Leonard Taylor. Leonard's dad, Fred, retired from hiking with his son after the grueling trek on which this photo was taken.😂
DIRECTIONS to the trailhead: From FR 61, turn north onto FR 771. Drive about a mile and park at the cowboy gate.
The Ida Mine mainly produced lead, silver, tungsten and copper ores during the early 1900's.

This was another great hike with the Huachuca Hiking Club. Thanks Steve! More information about the club is here: https://groups.io/g/HuachucaHikingClub
If you want complete, accurate and interesting details about trails in the Huachucas, pick up Leonard Taylor's Trails of the Huachucas trail guide (2019) and the accompanying Trail Map of the Huachucas. You can buy them at Ramsey Canyon Preserve, the Sierra Vista Ranger District Station along Hwy 92 south of Sierra Vista, the Coronado National Memorial, the San Pedro House and the Carr House, on Amazon and at various outdoor stores.
Birds heard on this hike: Stellar’s jay, Lazuli bunting, Yellow-eyed junco, Canyon wren
