In this compilation episode of The Collection, host Mark Agnesi chats with legendary guitarists including Slash, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Paul Stanley of KISS, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, and Gibson President & CEO Cesar Gueikian as they show off their 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standards. These guitars have shaped the music of generations, and the stories behind them are as powerful as the instruments themselves.

In this special compilation and “Best of The Collection,” we start with Slash and his super clean 1959 Les Paul Darkburst — so clean he wondered if it was real. Rick Nielsen follows with a 1959 Les Paul, once owned by Geddy Lee of Rush, with original double-cream Patent Applied For humbucker™ pickups and (controversially) the covers removed.

Paul Stanley takes us through the story of his beloved ‘59, the “Stanley Burst,” which he had refinished after a Bigsby® snakebite and re-necking. Kirk Hammett shows us the most famous Les Paul of all — “Greeny” — and talks about its tone, the wear from Peter Green and Gary Moore, and the initials he carved into it.

Gibson CEO Cesar Gueikian introduces his 1959 Les Paul “Birthday Burst,” a sister to other famous bursts, and played during Les Paul’s 100th birthday celebration at B.B. King’s in NYC. And finally, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith shows off his flame-top beauty, the inspiration behind his Collector’s Choice run, and why it’s one of his favorite guitars to play.
