In Uganda, fixing a hoe usually involves fitting a worn or broken wooden handle (omugo) to the metal blade so it can be used effectively in the garden. The old handle is first removed, and a new strong wooden handle is shaped to fit tightly into the eye of the hoe blade. The handle is then firmly hammered in, sometimes with the help of water to make the wood swell and tighten the fit.
