Dr. Carol Kuhlthau Distinguished Professor Emerita Talks of her Research on the ISP

Dr. Carol Kuhlthau, distinguished professor emerita Rutgers University, summarizes the major findings from her research on the Information Search Process (ISP). The ISP has become a major theory in the field of library and information science. Dr. Kuhlthau observed students in school engaged in a research project to uncover their process. She analyzed students thoughts, feelings, and actions over time. The findings indicated zones of intervention, or places where educators could intervene to increase student success when researching. Reflecting on the process enabled students to learn how to learn. Here she describes the research findings with quotes from the original participants to highlight the students' experience.

All educators at every level benefit from knowing about this learning process which originates from the students' perspective on learning from information. The Guided Inquiry Design framework for inquiry based learning is grounded in the complete findings from this body of research to redesign learning based on what we know about how students experience research. This presentation took place on the Rutgers University campus conference center at the CiSSL hosted Guided Inquiry Design Institute Summer, 2016. The Guided Inquiry Design Institute is a workshop for educators to learn from the ISP research and apply the findings to improve student led research projects in the P-20 school environment. Teachers and librarians attend together so they can collaboratively design and implement with success at the school level. Dr. Lucy Santos-Green has done recent research(2023) on this training and its effects on student learning.
