BBC World Service Radio Interview: Annabelle Ariyanayagam interviewing me on the foreshore, and Kate Sumnall at Secrets of the Thames, London Museum, plus follow-up thoughts on mudlarking in the studio with guests Diane Roberts, professor of creative writing at Florida State University, and Erinch Sahan, Doughnut Economics Action Lab, hosted by Celia Hatton.
Ending an hour long programme focusing on a variety of current world horrors with a little feature on the no-worries pastime of mudlarking might seem an odd thing to do, but… following the interviews, studio guest Erinch Sahan gave his insightful take on mudlarking vis current affairs, specifically what the hobby gives us in the face of doom, damage, and destruction, perfectly capturing what keeps me going back to the river.
It’s that intergenerational thing - what would our ancestors think about where and who we are today? What will future generations think?
Recovering physical, fragmented remains helps me to decode the past, digest the present, and maybe - a very big maybe - decipher the future or at least some idea of it.
