Utah has long claimed to have the Greatest Snow on Earth, but what is the scientific reality? In this talk, University of Utah Professor of Atmospheric Sciences Jim Steenburgh explores the origins of the Greatest Snow on Earth phrase, identifies the key ingredients for great powder skiing, and determines if Utah's powder lives up to its reputation. He describes the patterns that produce the biggest dumps at your favorite resorts, reveals the secrets to finding great snow elsewhere in the world, and examines historical and contemporary issues related to avalanches in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Finally, he examines the future of snow and skiing in Utah as the world warms during the 21st century.
Jim Steenburgh is a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Utah. An avid backcountry and resort skier and creator of the popular blog Wasatch Weather Weenies, he is a leading a leading authority on mountain weather and snowstorms. He led the award-winning numerical weather prediction team for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. His research on snow, winter storms, and forecasting has been featured by The Weather Channel, New York Times, USA Today, and Salt Lake Tribune.
