The roastery in Shanghai is located on the luxury shopping strip Nanjing Road, which is one of the world’s busiest shopping streets. Since our filming here at the 30,000 square foot Shanghai Roastery, both the Tokyo and Chicago roasteries have eclipsed the size of the Shanghai Roastery. So it’s no longer the world’s biggest starbucks. It’s only the third largest starbucks roastery in the world now but it still is larger than the flagship Seattle Roastery. Just as Disney had to take unprecedented measures to bring a Disneyland to China, the former CEO of Starbucks Howard Schultz said this location is completely unique and relevant to the Chinese customer. The Starbucks Roastery environment honors coffee innovation as a modern-day Willy Wonka experience, where customers are only feet away from the theatre and artistry of our coffee craft." More recently the roastery has added an augmented reality feature by Alibaba: information about coffees and the roasting process is viewable by opening the company’s app and pointing it in different places.
Like the other roasteries, a two-story bronze cask sits at the center of the store. The cask is decorated with 1,000 traditional Chinese stamps, hand-engraved, telling stories of the company and coffee. The cask weighs 40 tons, and holds beans roasted in the facility, which are periodically dispersed through pipes around the facility for use. One of the roastery's coffee bars is 88 feet (27 m) long, the longest Starbucks coffee bar in existence.
