In this video, we look at some of the basic ideas surrounding antimicrobial resistance. We cover the different types of resistance, from intrinsic to acquired resistance. We look at what it means to be multi-drug resistant, extensively drug resistant, and pan-drug resistant. In the later parts of the video we do a deep dive into the five different antibiotic resistance mechanisms; inactivation of the antibiotic, modification of the antibiotic target site, decreasing cell envelope permeability, utilising the power of efflux pumps, and the use of alternative pathways, each with their own example. Finally, we cover the five D's of antimicrobial stewardship and how this should allow us to prolong the use of precious antibiotics and stop the rise of antibiotic resistance.
