Fall concert 2019 University of Pittsburgh Gamelan, dir. Jay Arms.
The University of Pittsburgh Gamelan was founded in 1997 by Andrew Weintraub and has been taught by Jay Arms since 2019. Since its inception the program has taught the musical traditions of the Sundanese people of West Java, Indonesia, including instrumental music (kliningan), classical and contemporary dance music, vocal genres, and experimental works by global artists. The program focuses on the salendro and degung instrumental ensembles and often presents tembang sunda/kacapi suling, calung, angklung, dangdut, jaipongan, kroncong, and other popular genres.
The gamelan program is proud to host Indonesian guest artists each Spring who come to Pittsburgh for a weeklong residency to work directly with the students, present lectures, lead workshops, and offer private and small group instruction in specialist instruments and singing.
