“John Kanaka” or “John Kanaka-naka” is a Hawaiian-American sea shanty originating sometime after the 1820s. This shanty is a hauling shanty that was sung while hauling on a ship’s halyards . the term “Kanaka” was adopted by sailors and whalers who had Native-Hawaiian crew mates and often couldn’t pronounce their (the Hawaiians) names, opting to use the term “Kanaka” (which is used to refer to the Native Hawaiian People)
