The evil of unchecked desire is part of the DNA of film noir. In this episode of THEY WRITE BY NIGHT, host Suzanne Lummis explores the unhealthy side of desire through the lens of the 1948 film noir, “Force of Evil,” the poetry of Bertolt Brecht and Theodore Roethke, and some real-world political events, past and present. It’s is not all nihilism. Lummis also shows how evil-doers occasionally find redemption -- in film noir and real life.
SUZANNE LUMMIS was the 5th recipient of Beyond Baroque's George Drury Smith Award for Excellence in Poetry, and a 2018/19 COLA (City of Los Angeles) fellow. Her essay defining the poem noir, "The Poem Noir, Too Dark to Be Depressed," was first published in the now retired Malpais Review. In 2023, she guest-edited a special Noir-themed issue of the international literary journal Pratik, an exploration in poetry, fiction, non-fiction and essays under the heading "Darkness in Style." Her poems have appeared in literary journals across the country, and in The New Yorker.
