Hi everyone! Welcome to this handspinning video. I love working with historic spinning wheels. I have repaired many of them since 2014 before teaching myself how to spin! My new venture in woodworking and woodturning began in November 2020. It has led to the purchase of this wheel... A wheel that had seen better days due to a broken swing arm and no treadle. It was my pleasure to put the work in to restore it because now it is fully functional as you can see in this video! You can find the restoration photos and information on my Instagram page @heavenlyknitchet.
This ‘x-frame’ pendulum wheel has its origins in Wisconsin, and it does have a label on the wheel for the date of patent: March 18th, 1856. This has been restored by me on Christmas Eve 2020. What a gift it is! I used oak for the replacement parts and stained them to match.
For this spinning session, I wanted to see how thin I could spin the cotton carded sliver on it. I love how the hand and foot coordination for drafting works for this wheel. For instance, my hand can be completely stationary during the drafting process until it is time to wind on. The use of the treadle is for the movement of the swing arm and, unlike other treadle wheels, it can be used primarily for drafting (see first 14 secs of the video), and it can assist with double drafting techniques (towards the end). The turning of the drive wheel is all about twist (and a slight reverse motion for winding on). There is more versatility with this wheel than I originally thought when I had purchased it. I am just scratching the surface with my pendulum wheel spinning sessions, but I am loving every second!
