Doudou Boicel, born in 1938, a native of Guyana, arrived in Montreal in 1970. He was a painter, poet and a pioneer promoter of jazz and blues in Montreal. He was founder of the legendary Montreal club Le Rising Sun in 1975. He brought artists like Oscar Peterson, Oliver Jones, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Muddy Waters, Bill Evans, Big Mama Thornton, Dexter Gordon and B.B. King to his club. In 2018. He was named Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Ville de Montréal. He died at the age of 81 on March 10, 2020. He wrote a book about his club in 2008.
Doudou Boicel reminds: After the first piece on the first night, Bill Evans rose from his bench and, according to Boicel, declared: “I can’t play with this f***ing piano. I need another piano.” He returned to the instrument, finished the gig, and the next night got a grand piano that met his demanding standards, the highest in music.
