Trump turns against U.S. allies to appease Putin | On The Record

Ian Brzezinski, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, slammed the Trump administration’s 28-point Ukraine peace plan, calling it an essentially Russian wish list that weakens Ukraine while rewarding Putin. He said it reminded him of the appeasement seen before World War II.

Brzezinski argued that the West actually has the strength to stop Putin but has lost the political will to use it. He thinks a fair peace has to make Ukraine secure—ideally through NATO membership or strong Western guarantees. The idea of turning Ukraine into another “Finland,” neutral but independent, doesn’t convince him because he believes Putin would just attack again as soon as he’s regrouped.

Instead, he suggests aiming for a “Korea-style” ceasefire—one that halts the killing but keeps Ukraine heavily defended. Brzezinski also warned that Trump’s foreign policy team is small, inexperienced, and too cozied up to Moscow’s thinking.

Still, he ended on a hopeful note, saying that most Americans, even many Trump supporters, still believe the U.S. should stay active in world affairs and stand up for its values.
