 Netflix's new Western series The Abandons debuts to a disappointing score on Rotten Tomatoes. Debuting on December 4, with seven episodes in total, The Abandons hails from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter. It centers on the conflicts of several outlaw groups during what's known as the Old West, with several familiar faces filling up the ensemble.  The Abandons cast is led by Gillian Anderson, best known for The X-Files, and Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey, with Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Aisling Franciosi, Lucas Till, Lamar Johnson, and Natalia del Riego also starring in the tense drama.  With 21 reviews and counting, The Abandons has debuted to a disappointing 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is roughly the same, currently sitting at 37%. It's worth noting that both the critic and audience scores will likely fluctuate as more reviews and ratings are added.  Set in Washington Territory in 1854, The Abandons follows two very different matriarchs. On one side, there's Constance Van Ness (played by Anderson), who presides over a privileged dynasty. On the other, there's Fiona Nolan (Headey), as she protects a makeshift family of orphans and outsiders. Their lives begin to intersect through two crimes, a buried secret, forbidden love, and contested land, culminating in a clash that aims to echo the evergreen class and wealth divides.  The assessments of The Abandons seem to differ on the success of its tone, either finding it to be too dark or not dark enough, considering the subject matter that the show explores. There is likewise the argument that the drama doesn't do enough with its impressive group of actors, particularly Anderson. Representing a villain of great wealth and influence, some have felt that the two-time Emmy winner is never quite allowed to move out of first gear.  The more positive reviews find that the Western does reward viewers who stick around for The Abandons season 1 ending, as the conflict builds to a worthwhile finish.
