A selection of clips from 2017 to 2019 illustrating the class 455 units in action on the Southern network.
With most of the PEP derived units now withdrawn, the exception being some 313s left with Southern, the mark 3 derived EMUs are now among the oldest stock on the railway. Although the 455/8s are younger than the first batch of 317s, technologically those with Southern are older as they retain camshaft control gear, some of which was recovered from withdrawn 4SUB units.
Chopper based control was judged to be insufficiently robust for use on the third rail network when these units were being built. Recycling of withdrawn but serviceable equipment has a long history south of the river.
Whilst there are no published plans for Southern to replace their 455s as yet, at almost 40 years old, they must be candidates for early withdrawal, either due to replacement or being surplus to requirements in the new reality of reduced demand.
