RARE German Rommel's Afrika Korps 5th Panzer Division WWII captured BMW RW 35 Motorcycle in very good condition. This particular motorcycle was captured at the Battle of El Alamein in Libya by the British 51st Highland Regiment. The motorcycle was taken to England as a war trophy aboard a troop carrier by a British Officer who used it as his personal bike until he died in the 1950s. His widow donated it to the Imperial War Museum until they traded it to the Canadian War Museum. The BMW stayed there until 2002 when it was acquired by an American midwestern museum that closed in 2015. At that point, the bike was sold by Gary Hendershott for $37,500 to the current owner. It still has the original paint, the 5th Panzer and Afrika Korps "palm" markings, the original seats and leather saddlebags. The BMW is a 1939-produced BMW RW-35, serial number 39029, with Pirelli tires, shows some fading to the original paint, normal issue scuffs and wear...but generally is a very good to excellent example. The motorcycle was running when it entered the museum collections, and the engine has good compression...but we have not tried to start it. We did get an expert vintage BMW motorcycle master technician to look at the BMW and he reports that it is in very good condition for it's age. It is 95% complete with only the rear tail light and the air filter missing - that tail light probably removed in WWII, the filter in England. The bike has some vintage wiring that needs to be replaced. Brakes work, clutch works, gear box is fine, transmission is good but needs standard maintenance, gas tank is dry and rust free. Petcock moves, fuel line is hard and should be replaced and throttle plate is fine. He estimates a few hours and a couple hundred dollars and it'd be running! This is the only Rommel Afrika Korps motorcycle in private hands that was actually captured, and the only other one is in the El Alamein museum in Africa. A once in a lifetime chance to own a fantastic piece of history! The RW-35 will be on display at the 13th Annual Virginia War Museum Militaria Show on Sept 24th. Can not be mailed, transport is the responsibility of the bidder. Payment MUST be received within 5 days. More photos coming soon!
