The US military has begun transferring ISIL detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq, citing fears of instability and possible prison breaks.
CENTCOM says 150 prisoners have already been moved from Hasakah, with up to 7,000 potentially transferred in the coming days.
Washington says the operation is being coordinated with the Iraqi government to ensure secure and orderly transfers.
The move signals a shift away from reliance on the Kurdish-led SDF, as the US deepens cooperation with Damascus on counter-ISIL efforts.
Recent clashes between the SDF and Syrian government forces have raised concerns that chaos could allow ISIL to regroup.
More than 100 detainees reportedly escaped from a prison in Hasakah, heightening urgency.
The transfers are taking place during a fragile ceasefire, amid fears the situation in Syria’s northeast could deteriorate further.
