It might surprise you, but there's a lot of truth to the saying that "you marry your parents." The relationship you have (or don't have) with your parents are incredibly influential. Based on attachment theory, it's these relationships that determine a child's attachment style which is something that carries through to adulthood. Newer studies even show that our attachment style begins to form within the womb, and is mostly developed within the first 3 years of our life.
