Welcome to the Pace Report live from the 2025 JCAL Downtown Jamaica Riddim and Jazz Festival in Queens, New York. Headlining this year's festival Philly's own Jaleel Shaw.
Jaleel has been on the international jazz scene for well over three decades. This well rounded alto and soprano saxophonist just released his brand new album, "Painter of The Invisible", his first release in 12 years. The album features guest artists vibraphonist Sasha Berliner and guitarist Lage Lund and is now available on Amazon, iTunes, and JaleelShaw.com. Backing Jaleel during his performance is Lawrence Fields on piano, Joe Dyson on drums, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Lang Lund on guitar.
In addition to being a bandleader and composer, Jaleel played with NEA Jazz Master and drummer Roy Haynes for 15 years and is currently touring with bassist Dave Holland and is a member of the Mingus Big Band. Over the years he's recorded and backed the likes of the World Saxophone Quartet, Chick Corea, Nate Smith, Tom Harrell, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Jason Moran, Jimmy Cobb, and Ben Williams.
In this interview, Jaleel and I sit down and discuss his new album, how he dedicates some of the compositions to the late Meghan Stebile, Tamir Rice, and James Baldwin, and reflects on his mentor Roy Haynes. To order Jaleel's new CD "Painter of The Invisible" or to find out his upcoming club dates, please visit him online at www.JaleelShaw.com.
