Brisbane's city centre is a captivating mix of history, culture, and retail therapy. Its pedestrian-friendly streets lead to a variety of landmarks that showcase its past and present.
Queen Street Mall & South Bank
The Queen Street Mall is the heart of Brisbane's shopping district, a bustling open-air pedestrian street with over 700 retailers. It's home to major department stores, designer boutiques, and historic arcades like the elegant Brisbane Arcade. Just across the river, South Bank provides a stunning contrast. This riverside precinct is a cultural hub featuring lush parklands, diverse eateries, and the famous man-made Streets Beach. It was developed on the site of World Expo '88 and now serves as a vibrant space for leisure, art, and events, offering a perfect escape from the urban bustle.
ANZAC Square & Post Office Square
Dedicated to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), ANZAC Square is a significant war memorial and a serene public space in the CBD. The square features a Shrine of Remembrance and an Eternal Flame, honouring Queenslanders who have served in conflicts. Adjacent to it is Post Office Square (Park), a small, bustling green space that offers a tranquil spot for city workers and visitors to relax, often used for community markets and events.
Religious and Civic Architecture
Brisbane's history is also etched in its grand public buildings. St Stephen's Cathedral, the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane, is a heritage-listed building and an example of Gothic Revival architecture. Nearby, the Albert Street Uniting Church, with its imposing red brick facade and tall spire, is another prominent city landmark. It's celebrated for its Victorian Gothic design and is still an active place of worship. The grandest of all is Brisbane City Hall. Located next to King George Square, this magnificent Classical Revival building is the seat of the Brisbane City Council. Its most prominent features are its 87-metre-tall clock tower, which you can tour, and a stunning auditorium with the largest copper dome in the Southern Hemisphere.
