An off-trail backpacking adventure through the most dramatic section of California’s High Sierra, the Eastern Sierra High Route (ESHR) follows the razor's edge between mountains and desert, staying as close as possible to the main Sierra crest between Mammoth Lakes and Bishop. In my opinion, it is the most fun an experienced off-trail hiker can have in the Sierra in 4-7 days.
This film documents the three summers I spent scouting the route, and my thru-hike of the ESHR in September 2025. The thru-hike proved especially challenging, with late-season snow, rain, and whiteout conditions during the stretch of route with the highest concentration of difficult high passes.
Ultimately, it was an unforgettable adventure and one of the best of my life so far. I hope you enjoy the story.
