Meet “Sammy”: Our Samick SG-40
This 4’ grand piano, affectionately named “Sammy,” was a piano we acquired recently and represents the kind of instrument you're likely to encounter in homes across the country.
Samick pianos fall into the economy-tier of grand pianos, along with brands like Young Chang and Pearl River. These instruments are made with less-seasoned woods and are more susceptible to environmental changes, but with the right care and service, they can be dramatically improved.
The 4-Tier Piano Quality System (Quick Refresher)
*High-End/Prestige: Bösendorfer, Fazioli, Bechstein
*Professional/Upper Mid: Steinway (Hamburg), Shigeru Kawai, Schimmel
*Consumer Mid-Range: Yamaha, Kawai (e.g., C and G series)
*Economy Entry-Level: Samick, Young Chang, Pearl River
Each tier serves a different kind of customer, and every technician should be familiar with how to evaluate and service pianos across all four.
