Japanese journalist Hideaki Miyoshi in a Mitsubishi Galant led from start to finish in the Gwynedd-based Vauxhall Sport Rally, winning by 79 seconds. Miyoshi was fastest over five of the 10 special stages despite gear selection and fuel trouble. He was the first Japanese ever to win a British round. Suffolk mushroom farmer David Mann revelled in the slippery conditions in his four-wheel-drive Toyota to clinch a career-best second place. Group N honours went to Jeremy Easson in his Ford Sierra, fourth overall.
Trevor Smith's hopes of a second successive victory were ended by a blown head gasket three miles into stage 3, forcing him to retire. Dave Metcalfe survived a nasty moment when the rear wheel assembly of his Nova, including brakes, broke away on a downhill part of stage 1. He later lost his rear bumper but held on for fifth.
David Mann went off on stage 1 but lost little time and suffered no damage; Glyn Jones rolled his Toyota on stage 3 but managed to reach the finish; Steve Davies hit a log on stage 4 but his Ford Sierra Sapphire was undamaged.
Steve Hill broke his gear lever on stage 2 while Paul Dyas had trouble with first and second gears on stage 4. Conditions were very slippery after heavy rain. Fog was also a problem on stage 6 but Kevin Furber was undaunted, clocking a best time of 13 mins 38 secs. Alister McRae stopped on stage 7 while leading his class and the Nova Challenge. He had been 18th overall.
Leaders after two rounds:
1 H Miyoshi Jap 43 points
2 S Hill Oxford 36
3 D Mann Bungay 34
