(17 Apr 1981) RR8116 SOUTH AFRICA: BOTHA'S SNAP ELECTION
Background to story: On April 29th, South Africa's white voters go to the polls in
what many commentators are seeing as the most important general elections in the
country since the 1940's. Prime Minister Pieter W Botha has called the vote
eighteen months earlier than he need have done and it's widely assumed he's done so
in order to counter opposition from Right-wingers and gain a mandate for his
announced policies of cautious reforms. For the nation's non-white majority,
however, those reforms are themselves pitifully inadequate. This report looks at
both sides of the vise that is squeezing Mr Botha.
