Hi everyone, and welcome to a new piano comparison video here at the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel. This particular comparison has been heavily requested, so we’re happy to oblige with a matchup between the Roland FP30X and FP60X.

This won’t be an in-depth breakdown of each instrument, we have separate videos for that, but this will be a detailed look at exactly how these instruments stack up to each other.

Piano Sound:

The differences between the FP30X and FP60X with regards to sound come down to two primary things; the quantity of sound selection, and how the sound presents itself to the player when playing them through the onboard speakers. If you’re just playing with headphones and mostly sticking to acoustic piano and e piano tones, there’s not a whole lot of difference between these two in terms of the sound.

The reason why they sound the same with headphones is due to the fact that they both use Roland’s new BMC sound chip and the SuperNATURAL engine with 256 note polyphony. If you’ll primarily be using the onboard speakers though, there’s a gigantic difference in terms of the sound - not just in the volume with the upgraded speakers on the FP60X, but with the clarity and depth of tone as well due to differences in the speaker placement.

As mentioned above, the FP60X also has substantially more onboard sounds due to the inclusion of the entire General MIDI 2 sound bank. The FP30X still has 56 onboard tones, but if a wide selection of tones is a priority, the extra sounds on the FP60X will stand out.

The FP60X also has the new ‘My Stage’ button, which essentially allows you to select from different pre-loaded effects combinations, without having to get into the Piano Designer app and spend time customizing.

Piano Action:

Given that both of these instruments have the same action, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this section would be very brief. However, there is actually a difference in the playing experience of these actions when comparing them side-by-side. We suspect this is due to the differences in the physical casing of the two instruments; the FP60X uses a combination of plastics and metals, while the FP30X uses more plastic as a way to keep the weight down.

The effect on the playing is that when you’re putting lots of energy into the FP30X, there’s a bounce like sensation, whereas the FP60X feels more rigid. People are likely going to prefer one sensation to the other, and one isn’t objectively better, so it’s definitely worth comparing them for yourself.

As far as the specs go on the PHA4, this is an action with a triple sensor, escapement, and a nice texture on the keys.

Piano Features/Connectivity:

Both instruments also offer Bluetooth MIDI and Bluetooth Audio. Both are also compatible with an optional matching stand and triple pedal board, while the FP60X also has the option of adding a floating triple pedal.

Now to the differences; the FP60X has a mic input with both gain and volume control on-board. The FP60X also has an auto-tempo detector, as well as tactile on-board controls of your upper and lower parts when the keyboard is split. There’s also a 3-band equalizer on the FP60X for real-time eq’ing. None of these features are present on the FP30X.

Summary:

These are two similar instruments at the end of the day. Whether the FP60X is worth the extra several hundreds will come down to how you plan on using the instrument. Since the core features are essentially the same, there will be plenty of situations where the FP60X won’t give you any extra mileage, while for others, moving up to the FP60X is a no brainer.
