Chief Master Sergeant Wayne G. Norrad's distinguished career spanned five decades. As a U.S. Air Force Special Tactics Combat Controller, he participated in the planning and execution of numerous deployments, including operations in Cambodia, Just Cause and Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
He injected special tactics capabilities into the formations of premier joint special operations teams while developing high altitude/high opening parachute tactics that integrated air and ground assets. Chief Norrad was chosen as the first chief enlisted leader of the 720th Special Tactics Group and later provided pivotal guidance during the transition of Twenty-Third Air Force to Air Force Special Operations Command.
While serving as senior enlisted advisor to the commander of Air Force Special Operations Command, his insights led to the establishment of multiple enduring processes, enhancing special tactics. His contributions include creation of special duty assignment pay, codification of battlefield lessons into procedure, establishment of the "Valor" device for Air Force Commendation and Achievement Medals, initiation of the title and chevron of the Air Force Command Chief Master Sergeant position, and enhancement of operator recruiting.
Following 30 years on active duty, Chief Master Sgt. Wayne G. Norrad continued to shape special operations as an Air Force civilian employee and served the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Air Commando Association, and Combat Control Association, and Combat Control Association.
Chief Norrad's devotion to duty and lifetime of dedication reflect great credit upon himself, special operations forces, and the United States Special Operations Command.
