TURN ON CC FOR TRANSLATIONS. CREDITS, THOUGHTS, AND DEDICATION BELOW
First of all, I can't believe it. I did it. Tackling hours of footage and different camera angles, coloring each clip according to the lights, undergoing the stress of my computer constantly crashing and not saving (thanks a lot Yuzuru), debating which clips to put in or not. And thanks to jardin and gnum for helping me find specific footages; wint and larisa for the constant encouragement that kept me going. And finally, dedicating this to larisa for her birthday ❤ Here's to another year of crying over Yuzuru together.
Thank you so much to Yuuki who graciously translated the bits of writing in some of the clips. When I heard the translations, I felt that "ah, this strengthens the theme of the MAD even more" so I had to include them.

-------rambling thoughts below
Did I cry while making this? Maybe. I started this super late - hence why I finished late and why this is coming out after he already made his 17-18 program announcements lol. The "narrative" flow of this project is pretty self explanatory. I wanted to create that parallel between the free skate of 2016 Worlds at the beginning to the triumph of 2017 Worlds at the end. After 2016 came all the practice footage, constantly working and reworking, recovering from his injury, looking ahead towards the season. And then there's that bit with the "opening pose - opening eyes" motif which I really enjoyed putting together, a nice way to segue between the practice shots and the competition footage. Lining up to his opening position, breathing in and out, telling himself he can do it three times before the music comes on. And then the rest is history.
Watching this season, it felt so much to me - the program choices, the disappointments, the successes - the highs and lows. And when I heard this music, to me, it really felt like it was the right choice to encapsulate the 16-17 season for Yuzuru. "Reborn." After 2016 Worlds, his foot injury, his interviews in Ice Jewel that provided us fans with a glimpse of those months afterwards, his fears and worries, he came back with "Hope and Legacy." The program itself has gotten mixed reviews, but for me, it really felt like a story - a story continued. The struggle didn't end after he finished recuperating. This season had so much - the addition of first quad loop, the troubles with the quad salchow-triple toe combination, the smiles, the frustration, it was all there, and it's all just another chapter of his hopes and in his legacy. With the montage towards the end, I wanted to capture the essence of that. Not just the triumphant podium moments, but also the falls, the getting back up again, the frustration - all mixed together.
With the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics coming up, this season felt very much like a bridge, a connection. From the triumphs and injury of the 15-16 season, he entered the 16-17 season in a new light - more expectations, more troubles. Challenging a delicate and interpretative piece, the building pressure of his titles and records, a new jump layout, difficulties with his short program towards the end of the season. But at the end of the finish line, he pulled through all that, built himself back up again after weeks off his feet, months off the ice, and became the first man to land the quad loop, brought back his quad toe to perfection, retained his GPF spree, won back the world title, set a new record in the free skate, and participated in Team Japan's victory at World Team Trophy.
"Finally, I can say I worked hard." His words after his free skate at 2017 Worlds really felt like a summary of this season. Rising up again, each day practicing and working towards his goals, and at the end, achieving them. The theme of rebirth. I think it fits.
