In this episode of The Newshour Agenda, host Padmaja Joshi will discuss how a monumental development that will take place on Sunday. What is it that we are talking about? The nation will get a brand new cradle of democracy. A brand new Parliament dedicated to the republic of Bharat. An oath to our democratic spirit and our Bharat’s indic heritage. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah let it be known today the ‘sengol’ or a sceptre will be placed in the new house close to the speaker’s podium so that it is constantly in view and a constant reminder to all Indians of India’s civilizational legacy. The sengol became a powerful representation of metaphor of India’s freedom after the last British viceroy Lord Mountbatten asked Nehru how he would like to mark the transfer of power. The Congress and 19 other opposition parties announced on Wednesday that they would not attend the opening of the new Parliament building on May 28 because Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to do so himself and "completely sideline" President Droupadi insults the high office of the President and goes against the letter and spirit of the Constitution. We are joined by S Gurumurthy, Editor Thuglak who will be expressing his views on this issue. “This idea came because there was originally a ‘sengol’ handed over before the midnight of 1947,” stated S Gurumurthy, Editor Thuglak.
