Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses sterile microneedles to create micro-channels in your skin. These micro-injuries prompt your body to produce white blood cells, naturally repairing and rejuvenating your skin. Microneedling can be done professionally (with longer needles and downtime) or at home (using 0.5mm needles, which I’ll focus on today).

Aftercare is essential for achieving the best results, so here are 12 tips for microneedling aftercare to support your skin’s healing process and ensure progress:

Sunscreen is a must – After microneedling, your skin is sensitive to the sun. Apply sunscreen daily for at least two weeks to protect against UV rays, which can worsen acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Physical sunscreens (which act as a barrier) are better than chemical sunscreens on the first recovery day.

Antibiotic cream + probiotics – For clinic treatments with longer needles, you might be prescribed an antibiotic cream to prevent infections. Follow this up with probiotic skincare to restore good bacteria and balance your skin's microbiome.

Don’t touch your face – Avoid touching your face before and after microneedling. Bacteria on your hands can transfer into the micro-channels and cause breakouts or clogged pores.

Wait before makeup – After using a 0.5mm device, wait at least 8 hours before applying makeup. Professional sessions may require a longer wait. Also, ensure your makeup brushes are clean to avoid introducing bacteria to your skin.

Avoid sweating – Skip swimming pools, saunas, and intense workouts for 24–72 hours. Excessive sweating and oils can clog pores and irritate sensitive skin.

Vitamin C benefits – Use vitamin C products to boost collagen and speed up skin repair. Opt for gentle formulas if you have sensitive skin to avoid irritation.

Gentle cleansing – Use a mild, non-active cleanser with lukewarm water to clean your skin without stripping its natural barrier. Avoid hot water, which can damage your skin's mantle.

Hydrating and nourishing products – Incorporate products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, green tea, and licorice root to soothe and plump your skin while aiding recovery.

No exfoliating acids – Avoid glycolic or mandelic acid after microneedling. Use them before sessions instead, as your skin is too sensitive for these ingredients post-treatment.

Avoid fragrance – Fragrance in skincare can irritate freshly treated skin. Check ingredient lists to ensure your products are fragrance-free during recovery.

Be patient – Give your skin time to heal fully before your next microneedling session. For 0.5mm needles, wait at least a week. If your skin is extra sensitive, allow two weeks between treatments.

Consistency is key – Microneedling requires regularity and proper care to see results. Don’t rush or overdo it, as this can harm your skin rather than help it.
