It’s the start of November on the smallholding: windy, wet and full of winter prep. In today’s tour I walk you round the animals and garden, share what’s working (hello, best-ever leeks 🙌) and what isn’t (🦆 the ducks still haven’t laid a single egg), and talk through our plans before the Christmas rush.
We move Sonic the retired pony off the chewed-up paddock (laminitis management + winter exercise), line up Dexter for new grazing and chat about a field shelter, and hens, feed costs and flock size for the new year. In the veg beds it’s leeks, carrots, beetroots under siege, and the Greek Gigantes beans finally ready to pick and dry. We do a quick storeroom check (baked potato squash, onions, wrapped apples) and I make a note for cleaning the Aga so we can get that cosy kitchen heat back on.
