(🚂) – |HISTORY-ON-THE-VALDOSTA-RAILWAY|
The Valdosta Railway (reporting mark VR) is a shortline railroad in the U.S. state of Georgia, connecting Clyattville to CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway at Valdosta. The company began operations in 1992 as a subsidiary of the Rail Management and Consulting Corporation, and was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. in 2005. The line had formerly been operated by the Georgia and Florida Railroad, whose predecessor, the Florida Midland and Georgia Railroad, built the line in the 1880s or 1890s. The Valdosta Southern Railroad (reporting mark VSO) was incorporated in August 1951 and bought the portion from Valdosta south to Madison, Florida, which the G&F planned to abandon. The line was cut back to Clyattville, Georgia in March 1972, and in 1992 the new Valdosta Railway took over operations. In 2005 the Valdosta Railway was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming. In 1954, the new Valdosta Southern Railroad began operating the former Georgia & Florida line between Valdosta, Georgia, and Madison, Florida. The Valdosta Southern was owned by Owens-Illinois, Inc. which operated a paper mill at Clyattville. The tracks from Clyattville to Madison were abandoned in 1972, leaving the Valdosta Southern as a 10-mile line between Valdosta and Clyattville. In 1992, the line was sold to Rail Management Corporation, which established the Valdosta Railway to operate it. In 2005, Rail Management sold all of its assets, including the Valdosta Railway, to Genesee & Wyoming Inc., which operated the line through its Rail Link subsidiary for a time. The Valdosta Railway is now part of the Southern Region of Genesee & Wyoming. The 12-mile section from Madison to the Withlacoochee River at the state line is now a paved rail-trail known as the Four Freedoms Trail.
