The caste-based reservation system in India has its roots in efforts to address historical social inequalities and discrimination faced by marginalized communities, particularly the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The concept was first introduced in British India with the Poona Pact of 1932, which reserved seats in legislative bodies for SCs. Post-independence, the Indian Constitution, through Articles 15(4) and 16(4), institutionalized reservations in education, employment, and political representation to promote social justice and uplift historically oppressed communities. Over time, these reservations have been expanded and debated, reflecting ongoing challenges in addressing caste-based disparities in India.
