How To Rap: 3 Rap Techniques To Improve Fast

In this video, I’m going to talk about 3 of the best techniques I know to brush up on your basics and rapidly improve your rap skills. Some of you are driven to perform at a high level and want to accomplish as much as possible as fast as possible. Here’s how you can do that:

Practice every day

As with any skill, if you want to get better you need to practice every day. This is a pretty simple idea and I’m sure many of you are rolling your eyes at this. Yeah of course you need to practice every day. Well, of course you understand it, but are you actually doing it? Are you sure? Do you track it?

Let’s just pretend you know for sure that you practice every day, do you make goals for that practice? Do you focus on wordplay some days and flow on others? Or do you just barrel through each day using the exact same process?

I’m not going to say there’s any certain system you have to use, I’m mainly asking these questions so you think about how you structure your practice. It may be helpful to reorganize or formalize what you’re trying to accomplish to make sure you’re really improving and reaching your goals.

Write themed verses

Piggybacking on the last piece of advice is to write themed verses. When I say themed verses, I mean have a very clear skill goal for your verse. For example, maybe you write a 16 bar verse with the theme of rhyming, and give yourself a minimum of 24 rhymes that have to be in that verse while still being coherent.

Challenge yourself. Naturally, adding these rules and goals will force you to practice and expand whatever your focus is. These may or may not be writings you want to release as songs, but they’ll help improve your skills quickly. Also, when you focus in on a particular skill, it moves closer to automation and may be introduced into future verses more naturally. That’s the goal.

Freestyle with constraints regularly

Many of you are going to hate this because it’s difficult, but freestyling with extra rules can really push you to improve your game. For example, maybe you can only end each line with a word that starts with B, or maybe you stick on the theme of gardening. The more specific, the better and the more difficult.

Why would I recommend doing such difficult tasks? If you can learn to freestyle with these constraints, freestyling without these constraints is going to seem like a breeze. You’ll be able to generate ideas and chain them together without even trying. In addition, it’s going to train your mind to be more free during your writing process and push your thinking into rap style more quickly when you do write.

Full transparency though, this can be really challenging and frustrating. If you find yourself with the kind of temperament that gets frustrated and gives up quickly, you may not want to move into this technique until after you have developed your baseline skills more deeply.

One final note, this is much easier with a partner. If you both have constraints, you can use someone else to help carry ideas, as well as see how difficult the constraints you’ve added really are. If you’re both struggling with a topic or idea, then you know it’s one that would challenge everyone
