in 1837 Horace Mann, who is credited with being the father of American public education, was appointed Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education. He began visiting schools and found that they were uneven, they lacked funding, the teachers were underpaid, and many children did not attend school at all and he fought for funding for all schools from taxpayers. He was also a committed abolitionist. The Horace Mann Upstander book award was created to recognize book characters who recognize injustice and act in a way to right the wrong. In this presentation we will share a number of books that have won the award and encourage readers to find other book characters who can be their heroes. Perhaps your class can crate an award as well Upstanderaward.org.
