From the late 1960s until 1998, a period of Irish History has become known, perhaps euphemistically, as the Troubles. It involved sectarian violence between Loyalists, Unionists and the British Army, often along religious divides between Catholics and Protestants. It centred on the rule of Northern Ireland, whether it ought to join with the Republic of Ireland or remain under the control of the United Kingdom.
