Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Penang Hokkien language.
Penang Hokkien is a distinct variant of Hokkien spoken primarily in Penang, Malaysia. It evolved from various Hokkien dialects—often collectively referred to as Southern Min or Minnan—brought by Chinese immigrants to the Malay Peninsula. The foundation of Penang Hokkien is the Zhangzhou dialect, but over time, it has absorbed influences from the Quanzhou and Xiamen dialects, as well as other Chinese languages, including Teochew, Hakka, and Cantonese. Additionally, due to Penang’s multicultural environment, the language has incorporated loanwords from Malay, English, and other languages. Today, Penang Hokkien serves as the lingua franca of the local Chinese community and stands out with its unique pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, setting it apart from other Hokkien varieties spoken in Southeast Asia.
The Penang Hokkien-speaking community includes ethnic Chinese of various backgrounds, such as Hokkien speakers from Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, and Xiamen, alongside Teochew, Hakka, Cantonese, Taishanese, and Hainanese settlers from the southern provinces of China, namely Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan. Penang’s culture reflects a fascinating blend of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western influences, shaping its rich heritage of food, festivals, and traditions. Local Chinese cuisine is divided into home-cooked dishes, often known as Nyonya food, and street food, which includes iconic hawker favorites like Penang laksa and char koay teow. Festivals such as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Chinese New Year are celebrated with vibrant traditions and seasonal delicacies. Today, Penang is a major tourist destination, drawing visitors eager to explore its cultural heritage and historic sites.
Although Penang Hokkien has traditionally been an oral language, there have been numerous efforts over the past two decades to develop a writing system for it. In 2023, the Penang State Government took a major step forward by introducing Learn Penang Hokkien using Taiji Romanisation—a modern writing system specifically designed for the language. This video showcases the Taiji Romanisation system, making it easier than ever for speakers to learn and write in Penang Hokkien.
