Every swimmer in this 8km race from Magnetic Island to Townsville needs a support paddler, something the local paddling community volunteers for each year.
The morning starts with a paddle over to Maggie at sunrise, then it's time for the main event - supporting a swimmer across Cleveland Bay. The return journey has a good atmosphere with maybe a hundred swimmers in the water and their support crews spread out across the bay.
It's a chill morning of paddling and a chance to be part of a local tradition that brings together the North Queensland swimming and paddling community. Active water people supporting other active water people - that's what it's all about.
